The Moving House Checklist

Moving to a new home is an exciting step, but it can also feel overwhelming with so many details to manage. To make things easier, we’ve put together a simple checklist tailored for New Zealand tenants and homeowners to help you stay organised every step of the way, before, during, and after your move.

From giving notice and arranging movers to setting up utilities and settling into your new community, there’s a lot to think about. Planning ahead makes the process much smoother and helps you avoid last-minute stress.

Before You Move

  • Give your landlord or property manager the required written notice (if renting).
  • Confirm your moving date and book a removal company or rental vehicle.
  • Start decluttering and donate, sell or recycle anything you no longer need.
  • Order boxes, packing tape and other moving supplies.
  • Begin packing items you won’t need before moving day.
  • Notify your utility providers of your move and arrange disconnection or transfer dates.
  • Update your address with your bank, insurance providers, subscriptions and other important organisations.
  • If you have children or pets, make arrangements to keep them safe and occupied on moving day.

A Week Before Moving

  • Finish packing all but your everyday essentials.
  • Clearly label every box with its contents and the room it belongs in.
  • Pack a separate essentials bag with toiletries, medications, chargers, important documents and a change of clothes.
  • Defrost and clean your fridge and freezer if you’re taking them with you.
  • Confirm moving day arrangements with your movers or anyone helping you.
  • Organise parking or lift access if moving to or from an apartment.
  • Clean rooms as you finish packing them to make the final clean easier.

On Moving Day

  • Take final meter readings (if applicable).
  • Complete a final walkthrough to make sure nothing has been left behind.
  • Check cupboards, wardrobes, drawers, the garage and outdoor areas one last time.
  • Lock all windows and doors before leaving.
  • Return keys to your landlord, property manager or the new owners as arranged.
  • Keep your phone, wallet, keys and important documents with you rather than packing them.
  • Direct movers to the correct rooms at your new property to make unpacking easier.

After You Move

  • Unpack your essential items first so your first night is comfortable.
  • Check that electricity, gas, water and internet services are working correctly.
  • Test smoke alarms and familiarise yourself with the property’s safety features.
  • Update your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and electoral roll if required.
  • Learn your local rubbish and recycling collection days.
  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours and explore your new neighbourhood.
  • Check your condition report or complete an entry inspection if you’re renting, noting any existing damage as soon as possible.
